In, I think 1979, I first saw the Colliery Banners in the procession to the Miners Gala in Barnsley’s Locke Park. The image has remained with me and was an obvious starting point for ‘Lines of Work’. T
he hand stitched panels contain words from the banners, current headlines relating to work and the Articles in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1948.
A second theme celebrates the value of doing and making, being skilled. Barnsley has a history of making from the linen weavers and nail makers to glass blowers and engineers. It is all about sharing and acquiring skills; empowering and cathartic, the concept of do it yourself and do it together
