‘At heart I could not really understand why, in the same way that we used paints to create a picture, it is not possible to use materials such as old train tickets, pieces of string, bicycle spokes, and so on…. in a word, all the old bric-a-brac stored away in an attic or among piles of rubbish. Somehow I thought that working with those materials would be like giving my style a certain viewpoint and I soon discovered that this activity was a real personal pleasure for me. As time passed, this was the main reason for continuing with that kind of composition. I named this new technique based on the use of such materials Merz.’
